What is Coolstation?

Coolstation is a Space Station 13 server, forked from Goonstation in late 2021, with on-again, off-again development since then. We're still in development and have not formally launched. We're also not dead, I assure you!

The goals are a simpler, "classic" approach to gameplay, a throwback to the 2012 era of SS13 but with less lag and fewer slurs. Given that the team and community are almost all Goonstation players, admins and coders in origin, having Goonstation as our upstream means the general interface and aesthetics are immediately familiar to other Goonstation players who might be interested in a bit of a throwback.

This already makes us an odd server given that most forks are of /tg/-based varieties, but that's not all: Coolstation operates in a new timeline in the same setting as Goonstation with radically different circumstances, and the worst luck possible. Absolute crapsack fortunes for everyone, historically speaking. You? You'll probably be fine, don't worry about it.

So What's Different, Generally Speaking?

In broad strokes, it's similar enough. You have Nanotrasen, you're in space, you're far from Earth, it's 2053 and the only thing more volatile than the plasma is the station and its crew.

Thanks to the rippling consequences of a 19th century U.S. patent case, most intellectual property and copyright has stagnated. Development in everything from communications, materials science, power generation, machining tools and guns have been mired by a near exclusive focus on protecting rights and imposing licensing fees.

The moon exploded and sparked a space race, a company in Italy cranked out unprecedented (and previously unpatented) inventions, and a wormhole to and from a strange new star system was discovered.

This isn't the 2053 you know or expect: everything feels just a decade or more behind the times, despite space travel, teleportation and artificial intelligence being commonplace and unremarkable.

Instead of a profitable but dangerous interest in the plasma giant system for its resources and research potential, an accident has severed any and all travel and communication between the Frontier and Sol.

Without the threat of reinforcements and death squads coming from earth, the more headstrong, capable, or intelligent staff revolted. For the most part, they died, disappeared, or joined the ranks of what were once the fringes of the Frontier.

Nanotrasen, once an unassailable corporate juggernaut, is now headquartered in a field office converted from one of the least-broken cargo docks.

The Syndicate formed out of former mainframe programmers and terminal maintenance workers and are militant open-source fanatics with a grudge and crank-powered laser rifles.

Also in the mix are a Soviet research detachment, several clades of obnoxious, loosely-affiliated and clout-obsessed hypebeasts, unspecified Italians, burnouts, layabouts, anarchists, and what appear to be some extremely friendly aliens. :DDDD

Years later, small time factions are only just coming to grips with the monopoly's sudden vacuum and are beginning to make moves. Resources are limited, the economy's fake, and luck's run out.

Thanks to the fact that nobody can get fired without paperwork approval from Earth (and you didn't have the juice to leave in the initial chaos,) you still have a job and nothing better to do.

Will you play your part and help the rest of the crew get through their shift, or does fate have something else in store for you?

So long, 2053.

Happy New Year, 2053.
